The central system that authenticates identities and issues the signed tokens other systems trust — the organization's most critical piece of identity infrastructure.

Because every other system defers to it, an identity provider is also the organization’s single point of total compromise if breached — an attacker who controls the IdP can mint valid tokens for any identity it manages.
